Position Overview:
The Children’s Advocate at Crisis Line & Safe House of Central Georgia serves as the advocate for children residing in the shelter. The position is responsible for planning and implementing child-focused programming, under the direction of the Shelter Manager. This position is also responsible for providing back-up support on the crisis hotline during their shift.
Essential Job Functions as Child Advocate:
- Completes intake on each child in the shelter, identifying areas of concern or need
- Maintains complete records on children and keep statistical data on each of them
- Meets with and gets to know each child individually, providing time to talk and interact privately
- Meets with children and parents for the purpose of checking the progress of the child and recommends services and resources to assist the parent and child in achieving set goals
- Implements an evidence-based support group for children and collects data to measure the effectiveness of the group
- Serves as a liaison with schools and community agencies
- Assists with homework and other after-school needs, such as transportation
- Coordinates tutoring services when needed
- Provides educational opportunities for children, teaching non-violent methods of conflict resolution
- Offers parenting education as it relates to child growth and development, based on observations of each child in the shelter
- Creates and coordinates programs for the children
- Promptly documents all service provision and other relevant information in the CaseWorthy database
- Participates in on-call rotation for shelter
Non-essential Job Functions:
- Assists in other areas such as hotline advocacy
- Assists in office coverage when necessary
Requirements of Position Applicants:
- Possess at least three years’ experience in working with children, preferably in a residential setting
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Possess an understanding of domestic violence dynamics OR a willingness to learn about the issue
- Able to work independently
- Able to utilize the resources available both in the community and in-house
- Obtain CPR/ First Aid Training
- Pass criminal background check
- Willing to submit to random drug screenings
- Willing to adhere to all shelter policies and procedures
- Share on call duty as directed by the Shelter Manager
Other Skills/Abilities:

- Ability to learn to use TTY machine
- Ability to use all office equipment (Microsoft included)
Compensation: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
